Hearing hat and hut apart is a skill, not a talent. In a vowel-training study by Nishi and Kewley-Port (2007), Japanese learners trained for 9 days on nine English vowels, including the ones in hat and hut. Their vowel identification improved by 25% on average, carried over to new words and new voices, and was still there 3 months later.
