Hearing S and SH apart is a skill, not a talent. Little training research has looked at S and SH on their own, but the method behind TellApart, high variability phonetic training (HVPT), is well tested. Ron Thomson's 2018 review of 32 HVPT studies found strong evidence that it works and that the gains last.
