Hearing bowl and ball apart is a skill, not a talent. In a study by Alshangiti and Evans (2024), Arabic-speaking learners of English practiced picking out 14 English vowels, including the ones in bowl and ball, spoken by five different voices. After five sessions over one to two weeks, the learners who trained by listening identified English vowels significantly better than before.
