Hearing work and walk apart is a skill, not a talent. Lambacher and colleagues (2002) trained 35 Japanese learners for 6 weeks on five English vowels, including the ones in work and walk. Compared with learners who didn't train, they identified all five vowels better afterwards, and for four of the five, their pronunciation improved too.
