Hearing pool and pull apart is a skill, not a talent. In a study by Nishi and Kewley-Port (2007), Japanese learners trained for 9 days on nine English vowels, including the ones in pool and pull. Their scores on the three hardest vowels, the one in pull among them, rose from 36% to 70%, and on the other six, which include the vowel of pool, from 60% to 81%.
