Hearing these sounds apart is a skill, not a talent. In a study of high variability phonetic training by Lively and colleagues (1994), Japanese listeners got better at L vs R over 3 weeks. Three months after training ended, their accuracy was down only 2%, and after six months it was still above where they started.
