Hearing seat and sit apart is a skill, not a talent. In a study by Grenon, Kubota and Sheppard (2019), 23 Japanese adults trained on the vowels of beat and bit. They got better at sorting the two, including in recordings and voices they hadn't trained on, and 11 of them learned to hear the difference in the vowel's color, not just its length.
