Hearing hat and hot apart is a skill, not a talent. In a study by Lambacher and colleagues (2002), Japanese learners practiced identifying five English vowels, including the ones in hat and hot, for 6 weeks. They heard many different voices and got feedback on every answer. By the end, they identified the vowels better than before, and better than a group who hadn't trained.
