further · farther The difference in meaning and sound
What they mean
Both can describe physical distance: "the farther shore", "walk a little further". Only further works for degree or addition: "further information", "without further delay". American usage prefers farther for distance, while British English uses further for both.

What's different
In American voices, further is r-colored from its first moment, "fer-ther", while farther opens on a clear "ah" and turns to r only at the end of that syllable.
Most British voices drop both r's, which makes farther sound exactly like father, /ˈfɑːðə/. Their further keeps the flat, half-closed ɜː of fur, so listen for whether the first vowel is open or not.

ɜː (heard) is a muffled, central sound. ɑː (hard) is open and clear.
